Canon EOS R dibekali dengan sensor CMOS 30,3 MP dan prosesor gambar DIGIC 8. Bersamaan dengan peluncuran kamera ini, Canon juga turut memperkenalkan empat seri lensa terbaru RF. Adapun lensa RF tersebut adalah RF 50mm f/1.2L USM, RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, RF 28-70mm f/2L USM, dan RF 35mm f/1.8 IS SM. Lensa ini juga didukung dengan tiga jenis adaptor yang kompatibel untuk penggunaan lensa EF.

Kamera ini memiliki rentang ISO yang lebar, ISO 100-400.000. Tidak hanya itu, kamera ini juga sudah didukung dengan teknologi Dual Pixel CMOS AF untuk pencarian fokus yang lebih cepat. Canon EOS R juga memiliki jendela electronic viewfinder (EVF) OLED hingga 3,69 juta titik. Sementara di bagian atasnya terdapat tombol pengaturan multifungsi berbasis sentuh-geser.
